About us, Anna & Micke
In January 2004, we opened our hotel along with a holiday village and restaurant for the very first time. We moved from Stockholm with our two children, Julia and Axel, who were 9 and 6 years old at the time. Initially, we were open every day except for Christmas Eve. However, after two years of operation, we realized that opening for specific seasons works better in our area. As a result, we now have two seasons – winter and summer – and we open up to groups in between.
Micke has been a chef his entire work life and is passionate about good food. For him, it is essential to use high-quality raw materials, which can only be obtained by taking good care of the animals and crops. In 2004, it was not easy to get hold of good Swedish meat for the restaurant, which is why he started raising animals. This ensured that he knew they had been treated well and what they had been fed. It was also a great way to clear the slalom slope and the area around the hotel from overgrowth. We became co-owners of “Fjällbete” and started keeping 40 sheep in Kolåsen. We also brought our horses and pets from Stockholm and raised cows, pigs, and chickens.
I, Anna, worked as a teacher in Stockholm. When my husband and I started our hotel business in Kolåsen, I continued teaching in Kall for the first three years while working at the hotel. After moving here, we had the pleasure to meet Stina Bringsaas and Algoth Salomonsson who were both born, raised, and later passed away in Kolåsen. Through them, along with other people and books, I gained insight into Kolåsen’s history. This led to the creation of a book in 2015 titled “Kolåsen’s Historic Rooms”. We needed to renovate the hotel rooms, so we decided that each room would tell the story of one or two persons who had a historical connection to Kolåsen. That’s why we have the Churchill Room and the King’s Room, both with an 1800s feel, as Winston Churchill and Karl V’s brothers visited Kolåsen during that period. We also have the Ski Room, Flower Room, Hunting Room, and Fishing Room, based on the most common activities for those who visit Kolåsen’s Fjällhotell. Additionally, we have the Sami Room and the Egnérska Room, named after Nisse and Edith Engnér who took over the old hotel in 1924 and had the current one built in 1934.
According to a travelogue from the late 19th century, Kolåsen, located in Jämtland, is one of the most beautiful high mountain places in the region. This statement is indeed true. The area boasts breathtaking views of lakes and mountains, making it a natural wonder. The beauty of nature here is one of the primary reasons why we still live in this small village after 20 years.
My favorite place is the waterfalls where the temperature can reach up to 25 degrees Celsius on some summer days. The experience of paddling there and swimming in the waterfall is fantastic. We refer to it as our little nature spa where you can enjoy the sensation of being nibbled by fish, receive a massage from the water, and find mental relaxation in the peace and quiet.
Micke’s favorite pastime is to hunt grouse in the mountains. Skäckerfjällen, the untouched, wild, and beautiful mountain area, offers a genuine nature experience for hikers, skiers, and nature enthusiasts in all seasons.
We did not plan to “get a mountain hotel”. It was a spontaneous decision that turned into a mission to save a small mountain hotel for the future generations. The journey was tough, and we have had second thoughts many times, but ultimately, we believe it is worth it. This place is truly amazing!
We want as many people as possible to take part in this gem and be able to experience Kolåsen and Skäckerfjällen.
We are passionate about our work and will always be responsible for what we offer. Our focus is on pure food and simplicity, working sustainably for the benefit of animals, humans, and nature.
A warm welcome to us in the Jämtland mountain world.
